AFSCME Endorces Michael Mauro

 

Des Moines, Iowa – Council 61 of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) announced it’s endorsement of Michael Mauro in the Democratic primary for Iowa’s Secretary of State. Union activists from across Iowa discussed and voted to endorse Michael Mauro at a meeting in Newton Iowa on September 24th, 2005.

 

Dan Homan, President of AFSCME Iowa Council 61 said, “As our next Secretary of State, Michael Mauro will continue to will fight for increase voter awareness and participation and be a strong advocate for the working people of Iowa.”

 

AFSCME is the first union to endorse a candidate in the race and is the largest public employee union in Iowa with 20,000 members throughout the state.  AFSCME is widely known for its political and grass roots strength and Homan called on union members to volunteer on the campaign with house visits, phone banking and other GOTV activities.

 

“I am honored to have earned the support of AFSCME and look forward to working together to win this election,” said Mauro.  “As Secretary of State, I will work to ensure open and fair elections for the people of Iowa.”

 

For nearly a decade, Mauro has served as Auditor for Polk County, Iowa’s largest county.  Prior to being elected Auditor, Mauro worked in the office.  He brings over 20 years of election experience to this race and an unmatched passion for public service.
